Brown noise vs white noise: which helps you sleep?

The short, honest answer: brown noise is deeper and gentler on the ears, white noise has more research behind it — and the one that works is the one you can fall asleep to. Here's how to tell which is yours, tonight.

If you're reading this at 2am with a phone dimmed to its lowest setting, you don't need a physics lecture. You need to know which sound to press play on. So here it is up front: brown noise sounds like a low, distant rumble — a waterfall heard through a wall, a plane cabin at cruising altitude. White noise sounds like steady static — brighter, hissier, more insistent. Many people find brown noise easier to relax into, especially if white noise has ever struck you as harsh. But white noise is the version scientists have actually put through sleep studies, and it holds up reasonably well. Neither is "the correct answer." Your ears get the final vote.

What is brown noise?

Brown noise (sometimes called red noise) is random sound with its energy concentrated in the low frequencies. As pitch goes up, loudness falls away steeply. The result is a smooth, bassy wash with almost none of the high-frequency hiss that makes static feel sharp. People often describe it as heavy rain on a roof, wind through trees, or the drone of a jet engine several rows away.

That low-end weight is why brown noise feels physically calmer to many listeners: there's simply less energy in the frequency range where our hearing is most sensitive, so the same "masking blanket" arrives with less edge.

Why does white noise sound harsh to some people?

White noise spreads equal energy across every frequency, from deep bass to the very top of your hearing. But human ears aren't flat — we're most sensitive to the upper-middle frequencies. Equal energy everywhere therefore sounds tilted toward hiss. If white noise has ever reminded you of an untuned TV and set your teeth on edge, that's why. It isn't a flaw in you; it's a mismatch between the math and your ears.

It's still worth taking white noise seriously. In a small 2017 study, Messineo and colleagues played broadband noise to adults overnight and found they fell asleep meaningfully faster than on quiet nights — one of the more direct pieces of evidence that steady noise can help sleep onset.[3] The masking principle is the same for every noise color: a constant sound floor smooths over the door slams, snores, and traffic that would otherwise jolt you toward waking.

Is brown noise better for deep sleep?

Honestly: nobody has proven that, and we won't pretend otherwise. There's no solid study showing brown noise increases deep sleep compared with white noise. What we can say is that deep sleep naturally becomes scarcer with age — a large meta-analysis by Ohayon and colleagues mapped how slow-wave sleep declines across adulthood[1] — which makes protecting the sleep you do get more valuable, not less. Sleep matters for more than feeling rested: Prather and colleagues found that people sleeping under six hours were far more likely to catch a cold after virus exposure than those sleeping seven or more.[2]

So the fair claim is this: steady noise can help you fall asleep and stay asleep by masking disruptions. Whether the noise is brown or white matters mostly for comfort — and comfort is what keeps you using it night after night.

What about pink noise — and green?

Pink noise sits between the two: energy falls off as frequency rises, but more gently than brown. It reads as softer than white, brighter than brown — many people say it's the most "natural" sounding, like steady rainfall. What color noise is best for sleep?

The one you stop noticing. That's the whole job of a sleep sound: to be boring enough to disappear while loud enough to blur the world. A rough guide from what listeners tend to report:

  • Brown — you find white noise harsh, you like rumble and depth, or a snoring partner is the problem (low frequencies mask low-frequency noise well — more in our guide to blocking out snoring).
  • White — you want maximum masking across every pitch, or it's simply what you grew up falling asleep to.
  • Pink — white feels sharp but brown feels muffled; you want "rain without the rain."
  • Green — you like the water-like middle ground and the others feel either hissy or boomy.

One caveat worth saying plainly: sound apps are comfort tools, not treatment. If poor sleep is persistent, or you suspect something like sleep apnea, talk to your doctor.

How to run the test tonight

You don't need a lab. You need two or three nights and a little consistency:
