You know the routine. You can't sleep, so you search for rain sounds, tap a ten-hour video, set the phone face-down, and hope. Sometimes it works. Why does rain make me sleepy?

Should I add thunder to my rain sounds?
Try it — with two rules. First, keep thunder distant and low in the mix: it should read as weather on the horizon, not a storm overhead. Second, if you're a light sleeper or you startle easily, start with rain alone for a few nights before layering thunder in. The rumble sits in the same low-frequency range as traffic and footsteps, so for many people it masks household noise beautifully; for a few, any irregular sound is one sound too many.
