It's 2am. You've found a sound that finally quiets the room — rain, a fan, steady noise — and you're drifting. Then the timer hits zero, the audio stops mid-loop, and you're wide awake again, more annoyed than before.
Here's the honest answer up front: the problem isn't the timer, it's the cutoff. Your brain keeps monitoring sound while you sleep, and it reacts to change — a door slamming, a snore, or a comfortable sound suddenly vanishing. An abrupt stop is a change. A slow, gradual fade over several minutes is not, because it never gives your brain a sharp edge to notice. If a timer eases the volume down instead of killing it, you get the best of both: sound while you need it, silence once you're under, and no jolt in between.
Why do sleep sounds wake me up when they stop?
Even in light sleep, your auditory system stays on duty. What rouses it isn't loudness by itself — it's contrast: a spike above the background, or the background disappearing. That's the same reason steady broadband sound helps people fall asleep in noisy places in the first place; in a small study of adults sleeping in a high-noise environment, white noise shortened the time it took to fall asleep by smoothing over those contrasts (Messineo 2017).
A hard audio cutoff is contrast in reverse. One second there's a warm bed of rain, the next there's ringing silence — and if you're still in light sleep, which occupies a large share of the night and grows with age (Ohayon 2004), that edge can pull you back to the surface. If you've ever snapped awake at the exact moment a fan or podcast stopped, that's what happened.
Should white noise play all night or turn off?
There's no single right answer — it depends on your room and your nights:
- Play it all night if your noise problem lasts all night: a snoring partner, street traffic, thin walls, early garbage trucks. The sound is doing its masking job at 4am just as much as at 11pm. - Use a timer if you mainly need help falling asleep, prefer to sleep in silence, share a bed with someone who does, or simply don't love the idea of speakers running for eight hours.

Whichever you choose, sleep matters more than the method: consistently short nights have real costs — in one study, people sleeping less than six hours were far more likely to catch a cold after exposure than those sleeping seven or more (Prather 2015). Use whatever setup gets you the hours.
How long should sleep sounds play?
A practical starting point: set the timer for roughly twice as long as you think it takes you to fall asleep. If you usually drift off in 20 minutes, try 45 minutes to an hour. That covers the slow nights without running until dawn. Then adjust from experience:
- Waking when the sound ends? Lengthen the timer — or check that it fades rather than cuts.
- Waking later in the night to a silent, noisy room? You're probably an all-night person.
- Sleeping through fine? You've found your number. Shorter is fine too.
The fade matters more than the exact duration. A 30-minute timer with a gentle fade will beat a 90-minute timer that stops dead.

Can I test whether the fade helps me?
Yes — and it's worth doing deliberately. Pick one sound or mix and keep it constant. For three nights, run it with a timer and fade. Note (roughly) how long you took to fall asleep and whether you woke when it ended. If the fade nights feel smoother than what you're used to, keep the timer. If you're still waking after the sound stops, switch to all-night playback for three nights and compare.
